Apple has started an exchange program for Smart Battery Cases for the Phone XS, XS Max and XR. The devices sometimes have defects if they were produced between January 2019 and October 2019.
The affected devices are sometimes not or only sporadically charged when connected to a power source or they do not charge the iPhone or only sporadically. Apple didn't say why.
Unfortunately, the devices cannot tell when they were manufactured and Apple has not provided any further identification information. If you have difficulties and bought a device between January and October 2019, you can contact Apple or an authorized service provider and exchange the Smart Battery Case. The device is checked before the exchange. It is more difficult for those who bought the case after October 2019 – because here the question arises whether it was maybe already made in October or before. Here, too, Apple customer service or a service provider should be able to help with problems.
According to Apple, the program is valid for affected smart battery case models two years after the first sale of the model in retail stores.
The charging cases for the iPhone 11, 11 Pro or 11 Pro Max are not affected by the recall.
