Amazon: French logistics centers reopening in sight

After a legal dispute over coronavirus protection measures, French logistics centers of the online mail order company Amazon are reopening. Amazon is said to be working on gradually resuming work in the logistics centers from May 19, 2020.

This is done in consultation with unions and works councils and is a "positive step", Amazon announced on May 15, 20020, according to the German Press Agency (dpa).

The background to the closure is a lawsuit by the online retailer about protective measures for employees. Amazon had temporarily closed its logistics centers in mid-April 2020 after a decision by a court in the Paris suburb of Nanterre.

The ruling stated that the company had not adequately met the protective measures required because of the corona crisis. Since then, Amazon has only been able to accept orders for certain items. An appeals court upheld the decision.

Amazon justifies the closure of the logistics centers by saying that even if only a small number of the unauthorized items were accidentally shipped, the group could face a billion dollar fine.

Amazon has now repeatedly provided clarifications and information on the security measures for five weeks, the company said. The court decision was obtained from the Union Syndicale Solidaires union group.
