At its keynote speech in Cupertino today, Apple presented four new iPhone models. In addition to the iPhone 12 Pro and the iPhone12 Pro Max (more on the Pro Max in a separate message), the iPhone 12 as the successor to the iPhone 11 and a completely new size with the name iPhone 12 mini were among them.
Like its predecessor, the regular iPhone 12 has a largely borderless 6.1-inch display, which now has a higher resolution (2532 by 1170 pixels) because it was manufactured using OLED instead of IPS. As with the Pro, the glass is coated with a hardened “Ceramic Shield” that increases scratch and drop resistance. The edges of the case are no longer rounded, but square like the iPad Pro. The frame is made of aluminum. The colors black, white, green and red remain, while yellow and purple are replaced by blue.
iPhone 12 mini with 5.4-inch OLED
The new iPhone 12 mini comes with an almost borderless 5.4-inch OLED screen (2340 by 1080 pixels) with ceramic shield. This is significantly larger than the current iPhone SE (4.7 “), but smaller than the old iPhone 11 Pro (5.8”). The colors correspond to those of the iPhone 12, as does the angular frame.
The A14 Bionic known from the iPad Air 4, which is manufactured in a 5-nanometer process, is also used as the SoC (System on a Chip) for both 12-series iPhones. It has two high-performance cores and four for energy saving. It will probably still be supported by 4 GB of RAM. Both models support the new 5G cellular standard with download rates of up to 4 GBit / s.

In addition to the wide angle (aperture f / 1.6, 7 lenses), both have an ultra wide angle camera with 12 megapixels each and a front camera with 12 MP. Both have to do without a Tele and the LiDAR scanner introduced in the 12 Pro. The two iPhones without Pro can also be charged wirelessly with 15 instead of 7.5 watts – this is now called “MagSafe” and you need special chargers that are magnetically attached to the back of the iPhone.
No chargers and earphones included
The memory sizes are 64, 128 and 256 GB (not 512 GB), the US prices are 799 and 699 dollars. In Germany, the iPhone 11 has cost 779 euros to date, the iPhone 12 will cost 877 euros, the iPhone 12 mini 779 euros. From now on, no chargers or earphones will be included, just a USB-C-to-Lightning cable. The iPhone 12 can be pre-ordered from October 16 and will be shipped from October 23. We have to wait until November 13th for the iPhone 12 Mini and can only pre-order it from November 6th.
Here are the other technical data we suspected: WLAN 6 (802.11ax, 2 x 2 MIMO), 4K videos with 60 fps, 12 MP front camera for 4K @ 60fps videos, face recognition sensor Face ID, true tone Display for white balance matching the ambient light, extended color space (P3), water resistance according to IP68, location via ultra-wide band, GPS and GNSS.
