Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced the general availability of Amazon Managed Prometheus. Designed for monitoring containerized applications, it should enable users to securely manage large-scale operational metrics from AWS.
Full access to Open Source Prometheus
The Prometheus managed service is fully compatible with the open source version of the monitoring tool and provides access to the time series database and the Prometheus Query Language (PromQL). The latter is used to monitor containerized applications.
The AWS service apparently automatically scales the infrastructure that is needed for the ingestion, storage and retrieval of operational metrics from containerized applications. The offering can also be integrated into AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) and AWS CloudTrail. The aim is to make it easier for customers to control and check access to data.
What is Prometheus?
Prometheus is, on the one hand, a time series database that regularly reads performance metrics from a system in order, for example, to identify bottlenecks at an early stage (trending). On the other hand, it also acts as a pure monitoring tool by limiting the metrics collected to one data set – usually the last. The tool was originally developed by the music streaming service SoundCloud. In 2016, the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) adopted the open source tool. Two years later, Prometheus achieved the Foundation’s graduate status as a second project alongside Kubernetes.
AWS ‘Prometheus Managed Service is available to customers free of charge. However, there are costs associated with using operational metrics. More information about the new AWS service is available next to the press release one especially for it website set up by AWS.
