No matter whether Samsung, Huawei or Apple – these top smartphones have dropped by almost half in price. We show which models are worthwhile now.
In 2019, many manufacturers showed top smartphones, which are still among the best today. In some cases, they have become massively cheaper, while others have remained stable in price. We have looked around the market and are showing some smartphones that could be worth buying now.
Samsung S10 – 41 percent
The Samsung Galaxy S10 has been on the market since February 2019 and initially cost 900 euros. In the meantime, buyers pay 530 euros for this, which corresponds to a discount of over 40 percent. The Exynos 9 clocks inside, supported by 8 GB of RAM. The S10 offers 128 GB UFS 2.1 memory, a 3400 mah battery and a bright, high-resolution 6.1-inch OLED display. The triple camera setup on the back consists of a 12-megapixel telephoto lens, a 12-megapixel wide-angle lens and a 16-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens.
If you are willing to pay 50 euros more, you can get the Samsung Galaxy S10 + (test report) for 580 euros. It cost 1000 euros to launch, its current price corresponds to a 42 percent discount. It largely corresponds to the S10, but is slightly larger, which is shown by the grown 6.4-inch display. Also a little more battery fits into the case, namely one with 4100 mAh. In contrast to the S10, there are two punchholes on the front for two front cameras. The 10-megapixel camera is joined by another one for wide-angle shots with 8 megapixels.
The Samsung Galaxy S10 + was one of the most expensive smartphones on the market when it was presented at 1,100 euros. In the meantime, its price has dropped to 750 euros, which corresponds to a discount of 32 percent. The Exynos 9 offers a top processor with 12 GB RAM, 256 GB UFS 3.0 memory, a 4300 mAh battery and a very large 6.8 inch display. His camera setup on the back with wide-angle, ultra-wide-angle and telephoto lenses is still one of the best.
For all variants of the S10, we assume that they will receive an update to Android 11 in early 2021. If you are interested in the current models, we recommend our guide Samsung Galaxy S20, Plus and Ultra: Which model to buy?
Huawei / Honor – 45 percent
The Honor 20 Pro (test report) has dropped from 600 to currently 330 euros. That corresponds to a discount of 45 percent. Both externally and in terms of its technology, it is similar to the P30 models of the parent company Huawei. It still has all the Google services that are so important for Android, such as the Play Store. We particularly like the brisk performance, the chic exterior and the camera setup in the test report. However, there is no support for inductive charging and the option to use a memory card.
31 percent off the Huawei P30 Pro (test report); the price has dropped from 760 to 520 euros. Even if it is similar in many respects to the Honor 20 Pro, it goes one better in details. Its screen is a bit bigger, the camera more powerful, it has twice as much memory and supports memory cards. In addition, unlike the Honor 20 Pro, it can be charged wirelessly using a Qi charger (comparison test). The somewhat smaller model Huawei P30 currently costs 390 euros instead of 520 euros at the beginning (minus 25 percent). Here we advise you to buy the Honor 20 Pro.
To escape the Google ban, Huawei 2020 does a trick and brings the P30 series with the addition “New Edition” back on the market. The hardware has remained almost the same, the new models now have more memory. In the case of the Huawei P30 Pro New Edition, customers should pay an impressive 160 euros more. Is it worth it? Even if you assume that Huawei will provide its new models with up-to-date software for a year longer, we clearly say no. Anyone interested in the P30 series should resort to the models from 2019.
iPhone: 43%]Apple iPhone XS – 43 percent
Apple’s prices for its top models from yesterday are also falling. In contrast to Android models, iPhones have the great advantage that they are supplied with updates from Apple for many years. Unfortunately, this also makes them significantly more stable in price. At some point there will also be significant price reductions. Apple initially wanted 1100 euros for the iPhone XS with 64 GB of storage. Now his price has dropped to 600 euros. That corresponds to a discount of almost 43 percent.
With iPhones, it can be worthwhile to choose a model with a higher memory capacity, after all, you cannot feed it with external memory cards. But Apple can pay dearly for the extra memory. The iPhone XS with 256 GB of memory currently costs 750 euros. At the market launch, Apple still wanted 1200 euros. It is now 37 percent cheaper.
The technology of the iPhone XS can still keep up. The A12 processor in conjunction with the 4 GB RAM fully exploits its strengths, the 5.8-inch display is brilliant and techniques such as Face-ID are only available from Apple and you don’t want to do without them once you look at them got used to it.
Conclusion
If you want a top model at a mid-range price, the best option is a flagship of the latest generation. The Samsung Galaxy S10 is currently particularly worth it, with a price reduction of over 40 percent compared to the starting price. But the Huawei P30 Pro (test report) and thus the very similar Honor 20 Pro (test report) are also worth a closer look. They are 31 and 45 percent cheaper. It is currently the last generation of Chinese to support all Google services. If you prefer Apple, you can use the iPhone XS. It starts at 620 GB in terms of memory with 64 GB and is therefore 43 percent cheaper than at the start.
