Google chief Sundar Pichai has told the company’s employees to prepare for home office by the end of 2020. Bloomberg reports citing employees who want to remain anonymous. A spokeswoman for Google confirmed that the majority of employees should work from home by 2021.

Google had already started sending its employees to the home office in early March 2020 due to the new Sars-CoV-2 coronavirus and the resulting lung disease Covid-19. According to another statement by Pichai, only 10 to 15 percent of employees should return to the offices by June 2020; it is currently five percent.

Facebook also refrains from bringing its employees back to the offices until further notice. The company has offered its employees to stay in the home office for the rest of 2020.

Google relies on scientific knowledge

The two companies are therefore opposed to efforts in the USA and other countries around the world to change the existing restrictions as quickly as possible. Jacquelline Fuller, head of Google’s philanthropic branch Google.org, says: "We are guided by science in our decision-making process." This can be interpreted as a criticism of the easing measures taking place for economic reasons.

In contrast to other companies, Google and Facebook can continue their work quite well in the home office. Tesla boss Elon Musk, on the other hand, has been pushing for an opening of the economy for a long time, as, among other things, Tesla's production facilities are closed. Musk is currently threatening Tesla's move to Texas.
