Post by Elliot Page:
“Hello guys, I want to share with you that I am trans, my pronouns are him and them and my name is Elliot. I feel lucky that I wrote this, that you are here, that I came here in my life.
I am grateful to the amazing people who supported me on this journey. In the end, I cannot explain how it feels to love who I am in a way that follows me in a way that is original. I have been impressed by so many people in the trans community. Thank you for your courage, generosity, and constant work to make this world an inclusive and compassionate place. I will provide every support for a more loving and equal society.
I also want patience. My joy is real, but also fragile. The truth is, although I am feeling extremely happy right now and knowing how privileged I am, I am scared too. I am afraid of hate, “jokes” and violence. To be clear, I am not trying to suppress a joyful and celebrated moment, but I want to address the whole situation. Statistics are amazing. Apart from being widespread, insidious and brutal, discrimination against trans people can have dire consequences. In 2020 alone, at least 40 transgender people, mostly Black and Latinx trans women, were reported killed. To political leaders who work to criminalize trans healthcare and deny our right to exist, and to all those who have a large platform and continue to harbor hostility towards the trans community: Your hands are bloody. You release the vile and humiliating anger that falls on the shoulders of the trans community, a community where 40% of trans adults report attempting suicide. Enough. You are not “canceled”, you are hurting people. I am one of those people and we will not remain silent in the face of our attacks.
I love that I’m trans. I love that I am weird. The closer I hold myself to who I am and fully embrace me, the more I dream, the bigger my heart and the more I develop. To all trans people who are dealing with harassment, self-hate, abuse and threats of violence every day: I see you, I love you, and I will do everything I can to make this world better.
