Faster and better contrast: iPad Pro with M1, Thunderbolt and mini LED display

Apple presented the iPad Pro 2021 on Tuesday evening, it is now the fifth generation of professional tablets. Externally, the angular design that was introduced in 2018 is still available in two sizes with a screen diagonal of 11 inches and 12.9 inches (see also Mac & i-Liveticker). The unlocking takes place as usual via face recognition (Face ID).

The fast M1 chip that Apple recently introduced in the first Macs is now also in the iPad. The eight-core processor with eight-core GPU provides an increase in processor performance of up to 50 percent and a GPU that is 40 percent faster than the 2020 iPad Pro, according to the manufacturer. The storage facility is also connected much faster again.

The models with 128, 256 and 512 GB are equipped with 8 GB RAM, the 1 TB and the new 2 TB versions with 16 GB RAM. It is the first time that Apple has given the information about the size of the RAM on the iPad itself.

Just like the latest Macs, the new iPad Pro supports Thunderbolt and USB 4 at the same time – a novelty for tablets. This allows peripherals to be connected more quickly, and displays with up to 6K are also supported, including Apple’s Pro Display XDR. Details about improved monitor support have not yet been given.

A camera improved by an image signal processor and Neural Engine now supports Apple’s Smart HDR 3, which automatically combines multiple exposures. Even in poor lighting conditions, processing should now deliver better results. Apple has also integrated an ultra-wide-angle camera on the front of the iPad, which can automatically follow people’s perspective during video calls and automatically adjusts the section.
