In the past year, consumer communication has shifted further to the mobile area. While the number of minutes telephoned over the fixed network continued to decline, the amount of mobile data used skyrocketed. This is shown by numbers of Bundesnetzagenturthat are available to the German Press Agency.
In 2019, a total of 2.77 billion gigabytes were used in mobile communications in Germany. For example, a single person could stream music more than four million years at a time. This curve has been rising steeply for years; in 2018, the data volume used was still 1.99 billion gigabytes.
On the other hand, there is less and less telephone calls over the fixed network. Last year, according to figures from the network agency, it was 94 billion minutes. The equivalent would be around 179,335 years. In the previous year, people in Germany made 106 billion minutes of calls over the fixed network. This continues a trend that has been going on for years.
The minutes on the phone, on the other hand, have continued to increase slightly in recent years, but no figures for 2019 are yet available in this area. In 2018, around 118 billion minutes of calls were made from mobile communications.
