French digital tax: Trump and Macron reach agreement

France and the US have defused their dispute over the French digital tax. "We have an agreement," said French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday at the G7 summit in Biarritz at a joint press conference with US President Donald Trump. The agreement is good for both sides. On the day that there is an international solution, France will abolish the digital tax and repay until then overpaid taxes.

France had decided this year on a national level a tax for global Internet companies. Washington considers the levy to be discriminatory for multinationals based in the US – such as Amazon, Facebook or Apple. Trump had previously threatened with punitive tariffs on French wine.
