Funding: 15 million euros for the digitization of universities

The Federal Ministry of Education and Research is providing 15 million euros to continue the University Forum Digitization, which has been active since 2014. With this, the ministry wants to secure the continuation of the project, which aims to promote the digitization of academic teaching by networking German universities, until at least 2025.

Education Minister Anja Karliczek (CDU) said in the context of the announcement of further funding: “Digital teaching is the key to a modern and sustainable university landscape in Germany”. Digital formats could not replace traditional face-to-face events, but they could complement them. She also called on students to become more actively involved: after all, nobody knows their needs as well as they do.

The University Forum Digitization has existed since 2014. Over 2500 people from the university context are active in the network – lecturers, employees in support facilities, university management and students, as it says in the press release of the BMBF. The exchange takes place via events and online courses. The working group “Exam Formats and Scenarios for Digital University Education” is currently still dealing with the questions of suitable online exams in the third semester of the pandemic, for example.
