The gaming festival "Gamevention" attracted thousands of visitors to the Hamburg exhibition halls on the weekend. Even gambling or looking over the shoulder of e-sports pros playing games – the fair offered gaming fans a broad program around gaming. So far, about 7,000 visitors came to the fair, said event spokesman Achim Quinke on Sunday morning. He was confident that the targeted brand of 10,000 visitors would be reached during the day.
On Saturday, Hamburg's First Mayor Peter Tschentscher (SPD) opened the "Gamevention". Tschentscher's speech is a strong signal, Quinke said. With about 200 companies, the Hanseatic city is a hotspot of the games industry in Germany, but so far there are no noteworthy events for gaming fans. This gap would be closed by the "Gamevention", they said. Already on Friday, the trade fair opened its doors to the trade public.
E-sports and cosplay
The focus of the weekend's gaming festival was on e-sports and cosplay. On an extra e-sports stage, for example, hobby players were able to compete with professional players in popular game titles such as "League of Legends" or "Counter-Strike: Global Offensive". In the cosplay area, visitors expected different workshops and live acts.
Cosplayers reproduce characters from popular anime series, movies or video games. It is about representing the respective character through costume and behavior as true to the original as possible. At a contest on Saturday, a jury of experts honored the best cosplayers. On Sunday, the e-sports pros of HSV and FC St. Pauli met at "FIFA eStadtderby". In addition, visitors were able to test and play gaming novelties or well-known titles themselves at various stations.
