“Horizon Forbidden West”: Sony offers upgrade to next-gen console after criticism

After Sony announced that there would be no upgrade option for the Playstation exclusive “Horizon Forbiddden West” from the PS4 version to the PS5 version of the game in the standard edition, the company received massive criticism. Now Sony reports with an update on the Playstation blog: “It is absolutely clear that the offers that we confirmed when we started our pre-orders have missed the target”. Accordingly, a later upgrade is now possible.

After the announcement, it was announced that the standard version of the game would be sold in separate versions for the Playstation 4 and Playstation 5 – without the option of upgrading the PS4 version to the optimized version for the PS5. Against the background that it will be difficult to get hold of a Playstation 5 by the release – which has been postponed to February 2022 – the only option is to use the PS4 version.

The “Horizon Forbidden West” standard version should come on the market for 70 euros (PS4) or 80 euros (PS5). According to the edition descriptions, the more expensive editions have contained the versions for both systems since the first announcement – in the form of different download codes for the corresponding console.

Last year they pledged to provide ‘free’ upgrades for the cross-gen titles, including “Horizon Forbidden West”. “Players who buy” Horizon Forbidden West “for the Playstation 4 can upgrade to the Playstation 5 version ‘for free'”, so the wording in the Playstation blog entry. The next paragraph goes on to say that there will also be a digital upgrade option for future cross-gen Playstation games for $ 10 – including titles like the next God of War and Gran Tourismo.

It remains to be seen whether an upgrade from “Horizon Forbidden West” will actually be ‘free’ or cost 10 US dollars or 10 euros – as with the other games.
