Mac utility classic DragThing dies – because of Catalina

[ad_1]

Catalos 10.15 alias Catalina provides the first victims of the classic Mac apps. The longtime developer of Apple tools James Thomson, who runs the studio TLA Systems, has announced on its website that DragThing hired for as many as 24 years.

DragThing was created for the classic macOS and later became the most popular dock replacement. The tool allowed the creation of own App icon environments, had an application switcher integrated, an incredible number of customization and design options and was often deeply integrated into his Mac workflow for his fans.

The reason for Thomson's decision to stop working on DragThing after such a long time and stop selling at the same time is simple: With Catalina Apple makes 64-bit programs mandatory for the first time, 32-bit code does not start anymore. "A 64-bit support would require a full rewrite of the code from scratch, a process that would take at least a year – and there are no guarantees that we could re-implement all the existing functionality and what it would have for the future "Thomson writes. He was sad to say that "DragThing launched his last app".

Thomson also sees the problem of finding a market for DragThing, which can not represent the conversion economically. The income of TLA Systems comes according to his information in the last ten years, especially from the calculator App PCalc. If he took care of DragThing now, he could not improve it. DragThing continues download and, according to Thomson, should continue to run under macOS 10.14 and younger

The end of the 32-bit apps under macOS 10.15 aka Catalina should still provide for several other "victims" – especially applications that developers have not touched for a long time or where it simply does not pay, a rewrite for Apple's newer frameworks and SDKs to start.

Users should urgently check if any of their favorite apps are below before upgrading. A useful tool for this is the free Go64 from St. Clair Software, alternatively you can too to the function "System report" to grab.
