Many websites cannot be reached after DNS malfunction at the online service provider Akamai

After the malfunction at an Internet service provider, numerous websites were temporarily unavailable on Thursday. In Germany, for example, pages from RTL, “Bild” and “Focus” could not be accessed in the late afternoon. Internationally, the apartment broker Airbnb, the logistics companies FedEx and UPS as well as banks and airlines were affected.

The web service provider Akamai said in the evening European time that the problems had been resolved. The disruption was not caused by a cyber attack. Around 40 minutes after the first outages, the first of the affected websites were available again, but according to Akamai, it took up to an hour for some domains to be fully accessible. Users of the Playstation Network of Sony game consoles and the PC game platform Steam also reported failures.

Akamai had before Problems reported with his service Edge DNS. This service ensures, among other things, that websites can be accessed by translating the real names of domains into IP addresses and are protected against overload attacks, so-called DDoS attacks.

As recently as the beginning of June, numerous websites around the world were unavailable for around an hour after a malfunction with the Fastly cloud service. At that time, the British government, the Reddit platform and the news portals of the Guardian, the New York Times, the Financial Times and the French newspaper Le Monde were affected.
