Nokia XR20: smartphone with taker qualities and updates until 2025

Nokia has already scored points in the past with long software support for its smartphones. The manufacturer is improving the outdoor smartphone XR20, the model is to be provided with security patches for four years instead of three years like most other Nokia smartphones. The XR20 is the robust sister model of the X20. The exterior of the XR20 is also trimmed for durability – and you can see that on the 250-gram machine (171.6 × 81.5 × 10.6 mm). It is waterproof and dustproof according to the IP68 standard and can withstand falls from a height of up to 1.8 meters according to MIL-STD 810H. If the display breaks in the first year, Nokia promises a free replacement, and Nokia extends the manufacturer’s guarantee to three years. The device can now be pre-ordered for 499 (4/64 GB) or 579 euros (6/128 GB).

The hardware equipment of the XR20 seems a bit meager considering the price. Nokia equips it with a Snapdragon 480 5G and 6 GB of main memory. If it doesn’t have to be an outdoor smartphone, there are better equipped smartphones for less money. In the outdoor smartphone warehouse, however, competition is rare. The Samsung Galaxy XCover Pro, for example, comes with a weaker SoC and without 5G, but with a replaceable battery. The XR20’s flash memory can be expanded using a microSD card – at the expense of a second SIM card.

The XR20’s LCD panel has a FullHD + resolution and emits a maximum of 645 cd / m22 bright – this is bright enough even in sunny surroundings. However, the panel does not achieve the brilliance and contrast strength of OLEDs. Nokia leaves it at a maximum frame rate of 60 Hertz.

The XR20 takes photos with a rear dualcam – a 48 MP wide angle and a 13 MP ultra wide angle. The selfie cam has a resolution of 8 megapixels.

The red button can be assigned individually: a short press can, for example, take a screenshot or switch Bluetooth on / off, a long press can switch the flashlight on / off or function as an emergency call button.

The battery has a capacity of 4630 mAh and thus a little more than the one in the almost identical Nokia X20, which impressed with very long runtimes in the test. Wired, the smartphone charges up to 18 watts or wirelessly with up to 15 watts on suitable Qi charging pads.

Nokia leaves the user interface unchanged compared to the stock Android. In addition to four years of security patches, the device is to be supplied with function updates for three years. This is an unusually long period of time by Android standards. Samsung has recently been supporting its Galaxy smartphones for just as long, OnePlus has extended the update promise for its top smartphones by a fourth year and the Dutch manufacturer Fairphone has recently provided an update for the Fairphone 2 even after more than five years.
