Plug-in hybrid: the new S-Class drives around 100 kilometers electrically

There will be a plug-in hybrid of the new S-Class from Mercedes-Benz in the coming year. The model has a purely electric range of around 100 kilometers, the company said on Wednesday at the presentation of the new top model. The current S 560e is purely electric only 50 kilometers away.

Mercedes-Benz did not initially provide any further details on battery capacity and test cycle. The S 560e has a battery capacity of 13.5 kilowatt hours (kWh). It can therefore be assumed that the new battery will be around twice as big. Because charging takes longer, the new S-Class even offers a special fitness and wellness program for the plug-in hybrid. The program “Power Nap” be for example “makes sense during a break at a rest stop or when charging the battery en route”.

Fully electric EQS not until 2022

The NEDC average consumption of the previous plug-in hybrid was given as 2.5 liters per 100 kilometers. However, such consumption values depend heavily on the usage profile. In addition, the consumption values for plug-in hybrids are generally higher than for comparable combustion models when the electric drive is not used. However, the greater the electric range, the easier it is to actually use the electric drive.

Daimler wants to bring the EQS onto the market as a fully electric sedan in the luxury segment. The sedan is said to travel more than 700 kilometers on one battery charge according to the WLTP standard. Unlike the electric SUV EQC, the EQS is supposed to use a new electric vehicle architecture (EVA). The market launch is planned for 2022. The vehicle is to be powered by electric motors with a total output of 350 kilowatts (470 hp). The battery capacity should be more than 100 kWh.

New car factory opened

At the start of the new S-Class production, Mercedes put a new factory into operation: “Factory 56 embodies the future of production at Mercedes-Benz and sets new standards for automotive engineering”, announced the company. With an investment of around 730 million euros, the factory is “a clear commitment to Germany as a business location”. With the Factory 56, efficiency will be increased by 25 percent compared to the previous S-Class assembly. The EQS will also be produced there in the future.

With the new top model, Mercedes is also planning to enter level 3 highly automated driving. “It is expected that from the second half of 2021 the S-Class will be able to drive highly automated with the new Drive Pilot in high traffic or traffic jams on suitable motorway sections in Germany”announced the company. This should relieve the driver and allow secondary activities such as surfing the Internet or processing e-mails in such situations.
