Solaris Urbino 18 electric: Berlin transport company with electric articulated buses

A total of 17 articulated buses of the Solaris Urbino 18 electric type are now in service with the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) on the Route of bus line 200 on road. In this way, the pollution and noise pollution caused by the previous diesel buses should be reduced.

The Buses from the Polish manufacturer Solaris are 18 meters long and therefore just as large as the previous models. They have space for 99 passengers. The articulated bus is driven by a 240 kW asynchronous motor in the trailer. The bus has two battery systems – one lithium-ion battery and one with lithium titanate (LTO).

The batteries are charged via so-called Pantographs at the terminus. The principle corresponds to that of the tram. However, the pantograph is placed on the bus from a roadside device. The fast charging stations from Siemens were put into operation at the Michelangelostra├če and Hertzallee stops, and another is located in the depot on Indira-Gandhi-Stra├če.

The total investment amounts to around 16.7 million euros. From this, the BVG covers the costs that would have been incurred for comparable diesel buses. In addition, there are 4.3 million euros funded by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure. The state of Berlin will assume the remaining additional costs, i.e. the taxpayer.

The BVG wants to drive its buses purely electrically in 10 years. BVG now also uses 67 electrically powered monoplane liner services.
