According to statements in a television interview, two citizens’ initiatives have called for the resignation of the mayor of Grünheide (Oder-Spree district), Arne Christiani. The Tesla factory is being built in the municipality near Berlin. Christiani, who does not belong to any political party, had said to a Dutch TV station: “It doesn’t have to be said that I’m the greatest advocate of democracy.” He has to play by the rules of the game, but that doesn’t mean he has to be the advocate of the method.
The citizens’ initiative Grünheide and the Association for Nature and Landscape in Brandenburg announced in a joint statement that anyone who makes such statements has no place in such an office. Christiani did not want to comment on the accusation. He did not know either the contribution or the communication from the citizens’ initiatives, he said when asked.
The final environmental approval for the project is currently still in progress. Environmental associations sharply criticize the project. Among other things, they fear that the plant’s water requirements will exceed local possibilities. Tesla plans to build around 500,000 models of Model 3 (test) and Model Y in Grünheide every year. The final environmental approval via the Federal Immission Control Act is missing for the construction. Tesla is therefore building with early approvals.
