The ARD has reason to be happy: With 13.7 percent nationwide, their third TV programs achieved the highest market share in 2020 and thus the greatest audience success in 16 years. Converted to absolute numbers, an average of 24.8 million people tuned in to one of ARD’s third programs every day. The ARD announced this in a press release.
For the ARD chairman Tom Buhrow, the reason is clear: “TV at eye level, close to people and their everyday lives, reliable information. Especially in times of the corona pandemic, people in Germany have placed their trust in third parties.” According to Buhrow, the numbers would also show that viewers appreciate how ARD has further developed and modernized its regional programs.
The third programs include BR television, hr television, NDR television, MDR television, Radio Bremen television, rbb television, SR television, SWR television and WDR television.
Compared to 2019, the average daily reach increased by a total of 1.6 million people, and among 14 to 49 year olds by 190,000. In the period from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., when the third programs primarily offer news formats and regional information, they achieved the highest value in their history in 2020 with a 19.2 percent market share.
Primetime from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. also had more viewers. The reach of third parties increased in this timeline from 14.7 to 15.9 million compared to 2019. The AGF video research determined the numbers.
