TikTok clone “YouTube Shorts” starts in Germany

Google will activate “YouTube Short” in more than 100 countries until Wednesday, July 14th, including Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The new service now appears as a separate feed in the mobile apps for Android and iOS and is still marked as beta. So far the beta phase has been running in 26 countries. Short won’t be seen on the desktop version of YouTube yet.

Shorts appears in the YouTube apps as a separate, prominently placed feed.

YouTube Short is a direct challenge to TikTok; Google has apparently copied many elements of the Chinese short video app: the next video starts with an upward swipe, the YouTube recommendation algorithm ensures an endless flood of film snippets. Content is liked at the touch of a finger. Even those who create “shorts” themselves will quickly find their way around: As with TikTok, a maximum length of 60 seconds applies. Text can be added at certain points. A set of filters pretties the cell phone videos.

The company proudly proclaims a pound with which Google is growing in contrast to TikTok: “With the international start of our beta version, we will have millions of songs (and the trend is rising) and music catalogs from over 250 labels and publishers around the world, including the labels and publishers of Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment and Sony Music Publishing, Warner Music Group and Warner Chappell Music, Believe, Merlin, Because Music, Beggars, Kobalt and many more. ” This music catalog is available to short creators free of charge for backing the videos.

So far, the two video services were not considered direct rivals because they addressed different target groups. During the beta test of Youtube Shorts it turned out that fewer videos produced with Short than videos made for Instagram and TikTok end up there. The global start could now change that. Conversely, TikTok recently announced that it would also allow videos that are longer than 60 seconds. The new limit is three minutes.
