Twitter Blue: Introduced paid subscription with editing function

As expected, Twitter has introduced a paid offer that offers special functions in return for a monthly amount of money. The subscription offer is called “Twitter Blue” and will first be activated in Australia and Canada, the short message service announced on Thursday. For monthly 3.50 Canadian dollars (around 2.40 euros) or 4.50 Australian dollars (around 2.80 euros) there is, among other things, a bookmark function, an undo function to post-process tweets and a special reading mode. The free version of Twitter will continue to exist and it will not disappear, the US company assures.

Details about the subscription offer became public two weeks ago when a researcher discovered details in the source code. Twitter justifies the step to introduce the chargeable extras with special requests that are repeatedly expressed. They are intended for peoplewho use Twitter a lot and by that I mean really often. The editing function in particular has been requested by users on Twitter for years. As part of Twitter Blue, you can now set in advance how long such a subsequent correction should be possible. The maximum is therefore 30 seconds.

Those who take out the subscription offer receive additional extras such as customizable icons for the start screen on the smartphone, “fun colored themes” for Twitter itself and also very special customer support. However, this should not be a conclusive list; further functions should also be added based on the feedback.

Twitter Blue is now to become an additional source of income for the short message service, even if it is unclear how great the interest is. So far, Twitter has earned its money primarily with advertising, but advertisers have their tweets run as advertisements directly into the users’ timelines. Twitter has been thinking about additional income from a possible subscription model for a long time.
