Ubuntu 20.04 LTS in the test: refreshed desktop and longer support

A faster start, optionally a dark theme of the user interface and Wireguard VPN are the innovations of the new Ubuntu Desktop 20.04. It is also the first release with long-term support (LTS) that can be installed on the ZFS file system. But in the "Focal Fossa" version of Ubuntu, the ZFS functions are still considered experimental. Canonical no longer intends to reserve the update guarantee, which has been extended to ten years and also extended to packages from Universe, only to paying customers; Like the live patch function, private customers should receive the updates free of charge. Canonical wants to find out exactly how this is implemented.

The first innovation of Ubuntu Desktop 20.04 is noticed right at the start: The Ubuntu developers have accelerated the boot process, among other things by a different compression format for the kernel files. This unpacks faster than the competition during booting. The boot process switches seamlessly from the UEFI BIOS to Ubuntu. If the PC manufacturer has stored a logo in the UEFI, this will be displayed until the login screen is ready. For desktop users, this also describes the core of the innovations: better performance and a polished appearance.

One cannot expect revolutionary changes from the user interface, although continuity after the eventful years with Unity and Gnome 3 is not a bad thing. For users of Ubuntu Desktop 19.10 there is above all fine tuning; but you should change, as there will be no updates in three months as usual. Users of the previous long-term version 18.04 can finally enjoy the latest advances in the Gnome user interface. The Ubuntu desktop is based on Gnome 3.36, and some of the improvements in terms of speed and memory consumption are due to the collaboration of Canonical developers.
