US Department of Commerce: US companies can once again talk to Huawei about 5G standards

The U.S. Department of Commerce is about to sign a new regulation that allows U.S. companies to work with Huawei Technologies on standards for 5G networks in China again. The news agency reports Reuters citing two informed sources. Developers in some US technology companies had stopped working with Huawei after the Ministry put Huawei on the entity list a year ago.

The companies were unsure about which technology and information their employees could exchange with Huawei, the world's largest manufacturer of telecommunications equipment.

According to Reuters, industry and government officials say that has put the US at a disadvantage. In meetings to set standards where common protocols and technical specifications were developed, Huawei gained a stronger voice because US engineers leaned back in silence.

After nearly a year of uncertainty, the U.S. Department of Commerce has drawn up a new rule to address the problem, the report said two Reuters sources. The rule allows US companies to participate in standardization bodies, of which Huawei is also a member.

The US government wants US companies to remain competitive with Huawei. "But their policies have inadvertently caused US companies to lose their place at the table with Huawei and other companies on the entity list."said Naomi Wilson, Senior Director of Policy for Asia, at the Information Technology Industry Council (ITI), which represents companies like Amazon, Qualcomm and Intel.
